Holzbuch Studie I HOT SPOTS 2018/2019

Das Holzbuch hat 5 Seiten. Jede Seite kann man 12x blättern, zyklisch, inspiriert von Urformen der Animation, wie dem Zootrop. Das Holzbuch würde sich also selbst genügen, wären da nicht die HOT SPOTS; sie lassen die Animationen aus dem zyklischen Rahmen ausbrechen und verwandeln in einer Metamorphose eine Seite zur nächsten. Diese HOT SPOTS sind wiederum inspiriert von den der jüngsten Formen der Animation, Triggerpunkten am Bildschirm, die uns etwa im Computerspiel in die nächste Welt entführen.

Das Buchobjekt ist aus Holz mit Malplatten, Leinwand, Acrylfarben, Aluminium und Stahl gestaltet und mit Stop Motion gefilmt; die Metamorphosen sind digitale Gemälde, basierend auf etwa 1200 Handzeichnungen.

HOT SPOTS ist eine visuelle Studie, die Musik entstand unabhängig vom Film, wenn sie auch auf einer Improvisation zu einem Animatic von Iby-Jolande Varga basiert.

The wood book has 5 pages. Each page can be turned 12 times, inspired by ancient forms of animation, for instance zoetropes. The wood book could be animated in itself, if there weren't some HOT SPOTS; they make the animations break out of their cyclic frames and metamorphose one page into the next. The HOT SPOTS are inspired by the youngest forms of animation, trigger points in computer games, which transport us from one world to the next.

The book object is made from wood, cardboard, canvas, aluminium, steel, painted with acrylic colours, and filmed with stop motion; the metamorphosis sequences are digital paintings, based on about 1200 hand drawings.

HOT SPOTS is a visual study and the music was composed independently from the film, although improvised to an animatic by Iby-Jolande Varga.

SEEDS

Holzbuch Studie II SEEDS 2019–2021

Kugel-Loop, Tetraeder-Loop und Würfel-Loop – alle mit 24 Phasen in sich animiert – senden Kreis-Samen, Dreieck-Samen und Quadrat-Samen aus, um sich ineinander zu verwandeln. In Holzbuch Studie II SEEDS gibt es also keine direkte Metamorphose der Oberflächen, wie in Studie I, HOT SPOTS.

Das Buchobjekt ist aus Holz mit Leinwand, Acrylfarben und Magneten gestaltet und mit Stop Motion gefilmt; die Metamorphosen sind digitale Gemälde, basierend auf etwa 900 Handzeichnungen.

SEEDS ist eine visuelle Studie, die Musik entstand unabhängig vom Film, wenn sie auch auf einer Improvisation zu einem Animatic von Iby-Jolande Varga basiert.

Sphere-Loop, Tetrahedron-Loop, and Cube-Loop – all of which are animated with 24 phases – send out their Circle-Seeds, Triangle-Seeds, and Square-Seeds, in order to morph into each other. Therefore in Wood-Book Study II SEEDS there is no direct metamorphosis between the surfaces, compared to Study I, HOT SPOTS.

Holzbuch Studie III PLASMA 2021–2023

Mit der Buch-Metapher öffnen sich fünf leuchtende Tore des inter-stellaren Plasma.
Das Buchobjekt ist aus Holz und Metall, mit Leinwand und Magneten gestaltet. Mit einer 360° Kamera mit Stop Motion gefilmt, sind auch die vielschichtig handgezeichneten Metamorphosen-Loops der Buchobjekte in den 360° Raum projiziert.

PLASMA ist eine visuelle Studie – ähnlich den vorhergehenden Holzbuch-Studien HOT SPOTS und SEEDS. Die Musik vom Komponisten Stephen Ferguson ist für ein anderes Projekt von Iby-Jolande Varga komponiert.

Using the metaphor of a book, five gates of luminescent interstellar plasma are unveiled. Crafted from wood and metal, the book object is intricately designed with canvas and magnets. Employing stop-motion techniques captured by a 360° camera, the loops of hand-drawn, multi-layered metamorphosis within these book objects are further projected into the expansive 360° space.

PLASMA is a visual study – quite similar to the previous wood-book studies HOT SPOTS and SEEDS. The music was composed by Stephen Ferguson for a different project by Iby-Jolande Varga.

Holzbuch Studie IV CUBE CLOUD (2021-2024)

Wie real ist ein gemalter virtueller Würfel? Wie virtuell ist ein realer bemalter Würfel, wenn er 3D gescannt ist? Aus Iby-Jolande Vargas vierter Holzbuch-Studie entspinnen sich Landschaften aus Elementen beider Welten, die sich zuletzt in einer Wolke auflösen und wieder im Holzbuch verschwinden.

Das Buchobjekt ist aus Holz mit Leinwand und Acrylfarben gestaltet und mit Stop Motion gefilmt. Handbemalte Würfel aus Papier, mit 6K Video gefilmt und mit Metamorphosen übermalt. 3D Scans der bemalten Würfel sowie virtuelle Würfel, für die Stop Motion Sequenzen auch abgemalt.

Stephen Ferguson vertonte CUBE CLOUD mit einer meditativen Komposition und läßt eine rhythmische folgen, die noch in Arbeit ist.

How real is a painted virtual cube? How virtual is a real painted cube when it is 3D scanned? In Iby-Jolande Varga's fourth Wood-Book Study, landscapes emerge from elements of both worlds, which finally dissolve into a cloud and disappear back into the Wood-Book.

The book object is made of wood with canvas and acrylic colours and filmed with stop motion. Hand-painted paper cubes, filmed with 6K video and painted over with metamorphoses. 3D scans of the painted cubes as well as virtual cubes, also painted for the stop motion sequences.

Stephen Ferguson set CUBE CLOUD to music with a meditative composition, and is working on a completely different, more rhythmic scoring.
